If you are new here, hi! I started a series last month called “Goal Digger” where I talk about topics related to reaching your goals. You can check out the first Goal Digger post here. I talked about tips for staying organized and managing your time! Today, I am talking about how I surpass my goals. Working to reach a goal is great but surpassing it….even better!
I know reaching a goal can be hard. It takes dedication and time. So you are probably here wondering well if it is hard to reach a goal how am I suppose to surpass it?? When I set a goal for myself this is the motto I follow: “put in your best effort everyday and whatever happens at the end of the day know that you gave it all you got.” This motto has carried me through college and my career. A lot of people say you need to be very specific when reaching a goal and that you need to write it down. This may work for some people, but for me, I have never been super specific when setting a goal for myself. In college, I told myself I wanted to “get good grades.” I didn’t attach a specific GPA to that goal. I knew I would get good grades if I lived by my motto. Trying my best each and everyday.
The next thing I want to say about surpassing your goals is that you must envision your goal. You might not have a specific path or steps you are taking to get to your goal, but you must envision yourself reaching that goal and believe yourself when you say it. Something that really helps me believe in myself that I can reach a certain goal is to build confidence through reaching smaller goals. I will give you an example. Going back to the goal of “I want to get good grades in college.” I first told myself this, but it was scary to me. I didn’t fully believe in myself yet. I knew college was going to be hard. So first semester I put in my best effort and came out with a 4.0. Here is where I proved to myself that I could do well in school. The next goal I set was to make the dean’s list every semester (>3.7 GPA). Once I did this for a couple of semesters, I built a lot of confidence in myself. Because of this confidence and living by my motto, I was able to get into a national business honor society, triple major, and more. All of these things came out of one goal “I want to get good grades” and from that little goal I built up my confidence to accomplish things I didn’t even know I was capable of.
The last thing I want to talk about is celebrating your accomplishments. I think a lot of times once we reach a goal we give ourself a small pat on the back and the next day we are thinking about where we need to go next. I am definitely guilty of this. Not only should we celebrate our accomplishments for longer, but we should be happy in the journey too. Each day is a small milestone to reaching the bigger goal. I encourage you to reflect on everything you have accomplished up to this day and write them down. This is another way you can build confidence. Whenever you are feeling discouraged, open up your list and celebrate where you came from.
The journey to reach a goal isn’t easy. I am proud of what I have accomplished but those accomplishments have come from hours of hard work, staying organized and managing my time, and staying motivated. So whatever goal you are trying to reach, remember these things:
- give it your best everyday
- build your confidence by accomplishing smaller goals before you try achieving a bigger one
- envision yourself reaching that goal
- celebrate your accomplishments and the journey
- stay motivated
xoxo
