6 Hard Truths I Learned in 2021

My 2021 was far from perfect. What I imagined for my future was so far from what my future actually looked like. I learned more about myself than I ever have before. I grew in ways that I would never have thought possible. I learned lessons (a lot of them). I finished my last year of school and graduated. I began my career. I moved to a new city. I cried. I laughed. I lost friends I thought I would never lose. I gained friends I thought I would never meet. But most importantly, out of all of the highs and lows, I became the happiest version of myself. I want to share a couple of life lessons 2021 taught me in hopes that you can apply them to your life too.

A grateful attitude will lead to happiness

There’s always something to be grateful for, always. Even on your hardest days. I learned to wake up with a grateful attitude everyday and to choose happiness because it is a choice. Since intentionally doing this each and every day, I have never felt so genuinely happy. I don’t let the small things bother me. I focus on the good and it leads me to be so much more positive. I truly believe that when you are truly happy, you will radiate that happiness and others will notice it.

Never lean on your own understanding and always have faith

Sometimes things happen and we don’t know the reason why it happened. It might not be what we planned for ourselves, but everything happens for a reason. If something did not work out the way you imagined, just remember, it is either to protect you or there is something better in store. Trust and have faith that better is on the way.

Always believe that something wonderful is going to happen

I have this quote on my bathroom mirror and it has always held true. Sometimes I get surprised with something I never would have imagined happening. It might take a miracle, but God can make anything happen. When you live your life always thinking the best will happen, you will be shocked at how much good can come your way.

Trust your gut

There’s not much explanation behind this one. I still struggle with doing this, but your gut will always tell you what’s right and wrong. When you have a bad feeling about taking a new job, etc., then trust it.

Never forget your worth

Last year, I forgot just how strong I was, but it is the change that we experience that reminds us how much we can get through. I struggled with graduating, moving to a new city, and starting my career. I thrived in school and I felt lost without it, but there were times that I was reminded of my worth and how far I have come. I am proud of myself. You are not the only one who should know your worth though. Others should too and each person that comes in your life should respect you. I have become so independent (maybe a little too independent), but that independence has reminded me to find inner happiness.

Memories are just a moment in life

Sometimes we hold onto memories so tight that we try to relive what happened. What I have learned is that we must treat memories as a moment in time. They happened and we can look back at them and be happy, but you must keep your eyes forward, ready for the next great memory you will experience.

Now for 2022

Here’s to 2021 teaching me many life lessons. I am thankful for each and every single one of them. I hope your 2022 is the best one yet!
